Greetings from Lafayette
Hi everyone, and thanks for your motivating comments! Jimmy and I are spending the night in Lafayette, Al. It's town that once thrived because of the nearby textile mills. Like many of the small towns we've passed through, Lafayette has many shops that have since closed their doors. I was shocked as Jimmy and I walked four blocks down the street to the grocery store we didn't pass a single business that was open. The pastor of Lafayette First Baptist told us the unemploment rate went down last month... it's now only sixteen percent.
Tonight we are sleeping in a sunday school room at Lafayette First Baptist. This church graciously opened their doors
l
to us for the night. The pastor even let us take showers in his home and his wife is prepairing breakfast for us in the morning.
I was nervous going into this bike ride because our plan was pretty agressive--to ride across the country in 29 days. Some groups take twice as long for a route similar to ours.
Four days into the ride I can say with some confidence, we are going to make it. I really believe, Lord willing, we will touch the pacific ocean 25 days from now. We both feel strong and our bodies are getting stronger.
Jimmy and I are having a lot of fun during this ride. We are enjoying the many people who wave at us as we bike across green grasslands and rolling pine forests. We are motivated by the many people who ask us were we are going, and can't hide their surprise when we say San Diego. We won't soon forget the landscape of America we are pedaling across.
Thanks for all your support and prayers!

1. LaFayette
Guys, come on; don't make LaFayette sound like a ghost town. On the way to the store you passed a gift shop/hair stylist, a consignment shop, the feed & seed, Jimmy Brown' garage, the NAPA store, a lawyer's office, and a convenience store—all regularly open for business. They'll cast me out if I let don't let it be known that some things still thrive here. I only regret I neglected to get y'all some ice cream at the Dari Dee across the street. It was good to have y'all visit. My only regret is that I had meetings to attend shortly after your arrival. God's blessings on you as you go . . .

2. Thanks for the update
Rev Hand,
Thanks for helping us to paint a better picture of LaFayette. Jimmy and I really like the many small towns we pass through, and think it's sad to see many of the buildings empty. The towns do have many good people and much character.
Thanks agains for taking such good care of us while in Lafayette.
3. Never a doubt!
We never doubted your success in this amazing adventure. One question . . . I love the pictures but I don't see the little horn we gave you! Did you forget to mount that? Dave DR
